Triploid Carp and Aquatic Vegetation management
October 1994, 2565 Triploid Carp were introduced and the lake was weed free within two years. The carp have a 12+ year life span and are sterile.
We have added more Carp since 1994 with the DEC's permission. They regulate when and if we can add more Carp to the Lake. The yearly biomass studies help us convince them we need to introduce more.
DEC stocking Grass Carp:
To see details of the results from the Aquatic Vegetation Biomass and Water Quality studies that are conducted yearly by clicking on the year below.
- 2021 Total plant biomass decreased 38% from 2020 to 2021. Eurasian milfoil was found at all sites and made up 25% of the total collected plant biomass.
- 2020 Total plant biomass decreased 24.5% from 2019 to 2020.
- 2019 Total plant biomass decreased 15% from 2018 to 2019.
- 2018 Total plant biomass increased 6% from 2017 to 2018. Eurasian milfoil accounted for 63%.
- 2017 Total plant biomass decreased 30% from 2016 to 2017. Eurasian milfoil accounted for 42%. Reduce to 5 sampling sites by request of DEC after introducing 1700 grass carp. Results may have been skewed because of the reduction of sites.
- 2016 Total plant biomass increased 7% from 2015 to 2016. Eurasian milfoil accounted for 24%.
- 2015 Total plant biomass increased 30% from 2014 to 2015. Eurasian milfoil accounted for 14%. DEC request 10 sites be sampled.
- 2014 Total plant biomass increased 57% from 2013 to 2014. Eurasian milfoil accounted for only 8% of all vascular aquatic plants.
- 2013 Began to see measurable amounts of Eurasian milfoil and other vascular aquatic plant at 4 out of 5 sampling sites but still under DEC guidelines of 30%.
